Beautiful Saturday thanks to the Cashel Man

The Cashel Man, Epatante and on Sunday - these were my horses of the weekend. Or emotional companions, because betting horses can create an interactive connection. That's what I learned during the weekend.

Of course, we all watch racing because of the noble and brave horses. Or the great sporting achievements of riders and horses. Or the exciting competition in which the best horse wins But - the most beautiful thing about horse racing is still when your 10:1 shot dominates from start to finish and wins. No matter how high the stakes are.
The Cashel Man was such a shot on Saturday that made the Columnist happy for a moment. A good horse at long distances in flat races, but over hurdles it was a difficult thing in the race with the beautiful name Get Your Ladbrokes 1 Free Bet Today Handicap-Hurdle. Competition was high for the gelding, trained by Nicky Henderson: his stablemate Getaway Trump, for example, a promising young horse last year. Or the other stablemate Soul Emotion, the talented Dan McGrue, Pumbleshock, Star Of Lanka or Pride Of Lecale. Horses with a decent future.
But at the track it looked different: The Cashel Man and Jeremiah McGrath dominated the race from the top, jumped very well and always showed new back-up. On the long home straight at Newbury, no other horse could approach him. The highly traded Getaway Trump was stopped because he had no chance. It was a demonstration of pure class.

Class and the formbook
The same thing happened half an hour later, when Epatante easily broke away from his opponents in the Ladbrokes 'Where The Nation Plays' Intermediate Hurdle (Listed Limited Handicap) and won like a brilliant horse. The gelding was also trained by Nicky Henderson, only this time Aidan Coleman was in the saddle and Epatante was only 3:1. No matter, goal was goal. And because Borussia Dortmund, my favorite football team, won at Hertha BSC, it was a happy Saturday. So I can cope with the fact that my tip On The Blind Side had no chance in the featured Ladbrokes Trophy Chase and was pulled up early. That's life.
And sometimes intensive form studies prove their worth. Even at the German winter races on the all-weather track in Dortmund: In the Preis der Sandbahnspezialisten, a moderate handicap over 2500 meters, Azonto was a clear choice. His last three forms were very good, most of his opponents had some doubts at this distance. At the age of three, Azonto, trained by Mario Hofer, certainly has further potential. Another bonus: Jockey Micky Cadeddu rode the horse of his fiancee. Cadeddu did it strategically very well, always keeping his horse in front and then quickly found the gap inside. It was a superior victory and the odds 42:10 were not bad either.

Five top horses of the Dublin Racing Festival

It has been a little quieter on these pages lately, but that is changing again now. This time our view goes to Ireland, because  many of the Irish cracks for the Cheltenham Festival are in action on Saturday and Sunday at the third edition of the Dublin Racing Festival in Leopardstown. Jump racing at its best: Four Grade 1 races on Saturday, the same number again on Sunday, promise lots of class and excitement. Five top horses of the festival.  Chacun Pour Soi (Ladbroke Dublin Chase): It was in April 2019 during the Punchestown Festival, when the name Chacun Pour Soi was on everyone's lips. He had easily defeated Defi Du Seuil and Duc Des Genievres in the Ryanair Novice Chase. The defeated horses had won the JLT Novice Chase and the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, two of the most important races for young chasers. It was a fantastic performance by the gelding who had come to Willie Mullins from France in December 2016. He was, like many Mullins horses, not yet...

Tingle Creek Chase: A race for connoisseurs

One is missing on Saturday in the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown: Altior, winner of the previous year and the outstanding two-mile caser of recent years. But with Un De Sceaux (winner 2016) and Politologue (winner 2017) are old rivals at the start. It could be a thrilling duel old against young or routine against talent: Defi Du Seul, Sceau Royal and Janika are interesting newcomers waiting for the established ones.    The favourites Defi Du Seuil ( Trainer Philipp Hobbs ) is currently the bookmaker's favourite. A horse, who showed his class over hurdles and also over the big obstacles. Last season he convinced in the Novice Division, winning among others the Scilly Isles Chase in Sandown and the JLT Novices' Chase in Cheltenham. The gelding defeated the current Betfair Chase winner Lostintranslation several times. These forms are over longer distances, but Defi Du Seuil recently has beaten Politologue over two miles in the Shloer Chase. Again he showe...
